After years of complaints from the grassroots about Democrat interference, the Texas GOP is hard at work trying to close the primaries and prevent Democrats from influencing who Republicans nominate for elected positions.

So far, that’s proven easier said than done—thanks in large part to the actions of the supposedly Republican Secretary of State Jane Nelson. She was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2023 and is now responsible for overseeing all Texas elections.

Despite at least 73 percent of Republicans in Texas supporting the move to close the primaries—which would simply require voters to register as Republicans to vote in them—Nelson has committed over $1 million in taxpayer dollars to stop the Texas GOP’s efforts.

Texas GOP Chairman Abraham George is now calling out Nelson for all of this, pointing to her as a prime example of the Uniparty. “I don’t think she’s a Republican,” he said. “I think she’s a Democrat. And I think that she ran as a Republican because she knew that she could not win as a Democrat.”

He went on to say that this is far from the first time Nelson has worked against the state GOP. “She’s been a disappointment to the party, to the state,” George said. “She will do anything for the Democrat Party, but when the Republicans ask for a closed primary, she’s against us.”

The good news is that George is expecting a positive ruling from the courts in the GOP’s lawsuit to close the primaries. He also warned, however, that Nelson might use state funds to fight this all the way up to the Supreme Court.
