It was long expected, but it is the end of an era in Harris County. Judge Lina Hidalgo announced on Monday evening she will not be seeking reelection in 2026.
It was widely believed to be the result, as Hidalgo faces Annise Parker as a primary challenger. Hidalgo has also been plagued by numerous blowups at Commissioner's Court and a Texas Ranger investigation into her staffers.
In an interview with local television, Hidalgo said she was not sure what she would do outside of public office but expressed a desire to stay in public safety. Her office told our TV partner Channel Two Hidalgo will have more to sat at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
The announcement by the judge comes a little over a month after her latest meltdown at Commissioners Court. That led to Precinct Three Republican Tom Ramsey telling KTRH he was going to look into ways to throw her out of office.
Hidalgo won the seat in 2018 from longtime judge Ed Emmett. Her term runs through December of next year.
