President Donald Trump has unveiled his major trade agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom during a news conference from the Oval Office. The news comes on the heels of Britain finalizing a separate trade agreement with India earlier this week.
Trump teased the announcement Wednesday on Truth Social, calling it the “first of many” and referring to Britain as a “big and highly respected country.” A U.K. official noted earlier that “good progress” had been made in the U.S. negotiations, raising expectations of a formal pact.
Trump gave additional details about the deal during the press conference. He said, "They'll [The UK] also be fast tracking American goods through their customs process, so our exports go to a very very quick form of approval, and there won't be any red tape. Things are gonna move very quickly both ways."
He also said American chemicals, machinery, and other products will also be receiving new access to U.K. markets. According to Trump, the final details of the deal are still being written up, but everything should be completed within a few weeks.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined Trump in the Oval Office via telephone and thanked Trump for his leadership on the deal, saying, "Donald, thank you so much. It's really good to have got this deal over the line. Tribute to both teams, tribute to our countries, tribute to your leadership."
