The 2025 municipal elections were a bit of a disappointment for many conservatives across the state of Texas, primarily those who were hoping to see big conservative victories in school board elections, which wound up being dominated by left-wing victories.
So, how did these critical school board races wind up going toward Democrats after such a strong win for Republicans in November of last year? One of the biggest reasons appears to be the result of a problem conservatives and Republicans have had for a long time: poor off-year voter turnout.
Dr. Bobby Eberle, chairman of the Fort Bend County GOP, says that, "Each time you have success, conservatives and Republicans, now they’re ready to get on with the rest of their lives. To get back to work and do things."
He went on to say that this is a perfect example of how, in the political world, there’s no political off-season, no matter how much we wish there were. He said, "The Democrats will never go away. No matter how many wins we have, the Democrats are always looking to come back, and they’re always going to have candidates."
Dr. Eberle says the right needs to learn from this, because "We’re not always looking to the next election, to get someone elected. But we always have to remember that there’s another election around the corner, and Democrats are waiting. If we aren’t ready, they will fill those spots."
