Parents In Baytown Killing Charged with Misdemeanor

The parents of a boy Baytown police say shot and killed a schoolmate are being charged with "making a firearm accessible" to the boy.

The parents, Kenneth Coney, 61, and Cassie Coney, 37, kept a gun in their home hidden in their bedroom.

On March 21st their son got into an altercation with Anaya Zachary, a girl who also attended Baytown Junior High School.

After being dropped off, the boy went to his home and got the gun, then used it to shoot 14-year-old Anaya before going home and returning the pistol to his parents' bedroom, according to a police report.

Anaya Zachary was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital.

The boy has been charged with murder after admitting he shot Anaya, according to officials.

Technically, even though the gun was hidden, it was available to the boy because it wasn't locked away.

The couple has been charged with making the firearm accessible to their son, a Class "C" misdemeanor punishable by a $500 fine.

The parents have not been arrested as of Monday afternoon.
