The State of Maine has been sued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) after failing to comply with President Trump’s ban on transgender women competing in women’s high school sports.

According to the lawsuit, Maine is violating Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on sex. Attorney General Pam Bondi said at a press conference, “We tried to get Maine to comply. We don’t like standing here and filing lawsuits; we want states to comply with us.”

This follows a months-long feud over the issue between President Trump and Maine’s Democratic Governor Janet Mills. The DOJ lawsuit claims that Mills’ failure to exclude transgender women from women’s sports disadvantages female athletes.

It states in part, “The results are stark: girls are displaced from podiums, lose opportunities for advancement to regional and national competitions, and miss out on critical visibility for college scholarships and recognition.”
