Donald Trump scored a major victory for Texas after calling out Mexico for failing to deliver water to the United States that they owe under the terms of the 1944 Water Treaty.
He posted to Truth Social accusing Mexico of failing to deliver the 1.3 million acre-feet of water that they owe the United States. He said, "This is very unfair, and it is hurting South Texas farmers very badly. Last year, the only sugar mill in Texas closed, because Mexico has been stealing water from Texas farmers."
Trump went on to praise Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) for his leadership on the issue and blasted Joe Biden because he "refused to lift a finger." He then said that he would not be delivering any water to Mexico until they upheld their end of the deal and also threatened tariffs and sanctions on Mexico.
This seems to have gotten Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s attention. In her daily press conference, she acknowledged that Mexico had fallen behind on their obligations under the treaty and agreed to do more.
She said, "For Texas farmers who are requesting water, there will be an immediate delivery of several million cubic meters, based on what's available in the Rio Grande." She also says she’s looking for other ways to comply with the treaty’s terms and has already submitted a proposal to the U.S.
