Should Texas Send Illegal Aliens to El Salvador?

Trump has had great success with his deportation of illegal aliens in federal custody to the El Salvadoran anti-terror mega prison CECOT. Now one member of the State House is suggesting that Texas could do the same thing.

Texas prisons are currently crowded with illegal aliens that the state has to pay to house. According to State Rep. David Lowe, Texas is paying about $191,000,000, and the federal government only reimburses us about 6% of that cost.

He thinks sending those inmates to CECOT might be a way to solve both those problems. He said, "If we can find a way to free up bed space, and lower costs even by a small amount, I think it's a win for tax payers."

He says if a deal can be struck between Texas and El Salvador, it could save Texas taxpayers as much as 30 million dollars a year. He pointed out that, "over a decade, that's $300,000,000 that we could provide towards property tax relief, or better rehabilitation in our prisons."

Lowe also says that this would go a long way towards reducing risk for correctional officers in the Texas prison system, because many of these illegal aliens are often violent offenders, and they’ve been known to attack correctional officers.

He’s written a letter to Governor Abbott asking him to look into this option. He said, "The worst thing that they [El Salvador] could say is no. But it has big potential upside, and all we have to do is get the conversation started. We have to start thinking outside the box."

If Abbott were able to make a deal with El Salvador to house our illegal aliens, that contract would have to be approved by the U.S. Congress, but Lowe is confident that with a Republican majority in the House and Senate, it would pass.
