Coming off a decisive defeat in last year's election, Democrats have not only failed to correct course in the new year, but they're digging an even deeper hole. So far, their response to Donald Trump's second term has been rage, vulgar attacks, violent protests, and criminal acts. At the same time, the most prominent voices and faces in the party have been far-left leaders like Jasmine Crockett, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Bernie Sanders. "To be a party of nothing is to be a party of nihilism," says Michael Shellenberger, founder of Public News, in a recent Fox News interview. "They have nothing coherent...mostly just orange man bad, rocket man bad."
"But they really shot their wad last year when they tried to incarcerate Trump, called him Hitler, and then engaged in mass censorship against his supporters," he continues. "I don't know how you come back from that without some real hard reset."
A growing number of Democrats do want a reset, as evidenced by a recent CNN poll that found 52% of Democrat voters believe the current leadership is taking the party in the wrong direction. A Democratic strategist issued an urgent warning to the party, telling them to drop cultural issues and "focus solely on the economy."
But none of that will likely matter unless a new leader emerges for Democrats. Until then, they'll likely keep wandering in the wilderness. "You probably need some Democratic candidate who doesn't look like a traditional Democrat," says Shellenberger. "But someone who actually will build from the moderate majority outward, rather than from this radical left Democrat base that finds itself engaged in nihilistic acts of terrorism."
"I mean, it could get much worse for Democrats before it gets better."
