Northern Exposure: Canada Worried About Illegal Immigration

President Donald Trump has accused Canada of failing to secure its southern border, allowing illegal drugs to flow into the U.S. But that same border may pose an even bigger security threat to Canada itself. Professor Kelly Sundberg from Canada's Mount Royal University warns in a new 60 Minutes piece about a surge of illegals from the U.S. "Canada can expect a tsunami of illegal immigrants fleeing American authorities and coming into our country...the numbers are already going up," says Sundberg.

Sundberg goes on to say he believes the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration here will drive many illegals north, leading Canada to be "overwhelmed" and adding that many "very well might be bringing guns and drugs with them."

If Sundberg is right, Canada has all the more reason to heed Trump's warnings about beefing up its border security. Whether they do it to avoid tariffs or to prevent a new surge from the U.S., Canada faces a tall order. Montana Congressmen Ryan Zinke, whose state borders Canada, recently told Fox News the U.S.-Canada border is a security issue for both countries. "It takes 16 hours to go across Montana, and the border is 10 hours of that drive...and largely unprotected," says Zinke. "We have ten-thousand Mexican troops patrolling the southern border and we have the (Canadian) Royal Mounties on the northern border...but still a lot of border and a lot of distance between officers."
