According to data from the Census Bureau, people who have immigrated into the United States since COVID have gotten both poorer and less educated. You can blame the spike in illegal aliens entering the country for that.
Steven Camarota says that while legal immigrants into the country are statistically getting smarter, the same isn't true for illegal immigrants. They tend to be poorer and less educated and have made up the lion's share of new entries into the country.
Camarota said, "The number with only a high school education, or who didn't even graduate high school, is up 103%, and that's what drives the results." He went on to say that it's been natural-born American taxpayers who've been left to foot the bill for these low-skill illegal aliens because the aliens themselves don't make much money.
He said, "People who don't make a lot of money don't pay much in taxes and tend to be eligible for and use a lot of public services. So there's a kick in the teeth for taxpayers." Camarota also pointed out that this increase in the supply of low-cost labor also leads to slower income growth for Americans working low-skill jobs.
He says that while flooding the low-skill labor market might have some short-term upsides like cheaper fast food, it has huge long-term economic and societal consequences.
