Houston Mayor Asks Residents to Stay Indoors During Storm

Houston's mayor says "we need to limit our activity" as a strong Winter Storm moves through Southeast Texas during this week.

Mayor John Whitmire said on Sunday evening that driving is going to be very dangerous as the effects of the snow, wind, rain and especially ice start to mount up as the week progresses.

"We are prepared, but the reason I'm speaking to Houstonians this evening is we need your assistance, we need your help to let us help you! We need to limit our activity,

"We're already initiating our warming centers...but it's much, much more, first HISD has cancelled school, the courts have been cancelled," and airports will shut down at midnight Monday.

He added, "I've told our first responders to encourage those homeless people that choose to stay on the streets, we'll do everything possible.

"Myself and others plead with people to please go to a warming center, and for a variety of reasons, mental health being one of them, they just resist, but we will assist them in any way possible.

When snow mixed with rain and sleet resulting in ice on roadways and even on sidewalks, all transportation will be dangerous, the mayor said, and that's why he would like Houstonians to limit activity once the storms start to move through on Monday evening.

"First responders, fire and police, are willing to work overtime. They have homes and families that they're concerned about as well, but they're willing to put Houstonians' safety as their highest priority."

Houston Police Chief Adrian Diaz also remarked about limiting street activity during the storm, "If you have to get out, if you have to drive to work, please give yourself some distance, please slow down because the roads can be dark and you might hit on a patch of ice.

"You might put our first responders in jeopardy trying to get to you to help," so please drive with extreme caution not only for yourself but for others.
