Houstonians should prepare themselves this weekend for the colder weather projected for the region early next week.

The Houston area is likely looking at a hard freeze early next week with temperatures around the 30's and a chance of snow.

Editor of Space City Weather Eric Berger told KTRH News that it's still too early though to forecast any freezing rain, snow or exact temperatures.

"The really cold weather is probably coming Monday morning, Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning of next week but it's not clear to me if it's going to be 25 degrees in Houston, 30 degrees or maybe even a little bit warmer," said Berger.

It's hard to forecast snow chances with about a week out in Houston. Berger said there's about a 50-50 chance we see some kind of wintry mix next week, but at the moment, their models aren't showing any consistency.

"They're bouncing all around in both temperature and precipitation type," Berger said. "That will probably continue to be the case Friday and maybe even Saturday, but certainly by Sunday we'll be in the range of higher resolution models."

If precipitation were to fall, Berger says the likely window for it will be Monday night into Tuesday morning. It's just a matter of whether it will be snow or freezing rain, all dependent on the temperature.

"If the precipitation holds off until the middle of Tuesday morning then we'll probably be mostly above freezing and it'll be rain," he said. "If it comes earlier, it could be snow and there's the potential for freezing rain."

Berger suggest that folks plan accordingly and keep an eye on the forecast over the weekend when the colder weather gets closer. Temperatures are expected to climb back up to the 50's and 60's starting on Wednesday.

According to Berger, the last time Houston saw a significant amount of snowfall was December of 2017 with some spots getting one to two inches.
