Trump is set to take office in just one week, and border security is at the top of his to-do list. But what happens the next time a Democrat takes over? One Republican has filed the Remain in Mexico Act to prepare for that scenario.
The bill was filed by first-term Congressman Brandon Gill, who represents Texas' 26th district. Gill told KTRH News that the bill would help prevent future Democrats from opening the border back up again. He said, "All it does is simply take Trump's executive orders, the migrant protection protocols from 2019, and codify those into law."
Representative Gill went on to say that this bill should be a no-brainer because we already know how well these policies work. He stated that measures like the Remain in Mexico policy were "incredibly effective at securing the border under Trump's term. It is insane that President Joe Biden wanted to get rid of it."
The Remain in Mexico policy, for which Gill's bill is named, requires any immigrant attempting to come to the U.S. and claim asylum to wait in Mexico while that claim is processed. He says that's important because, "More often than not, we find out that their asylum claim is bogus, and we have to find them, and they don't show up for their court date."
Representative Gill is confident that the GOP caucus is unified on the issue of border security and will be able to get this bill through both the House and Senate quickly, and on to President Trump's desk.
