Gov Abbott Directs DPS To Bolster Anti-Terrorism Efforts After NOLA Attack

In the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in New Orleans, Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the DPS to bolster anti-terrorism efforts here in Texas.

Todd Bensman, national security fellow with the Center for Immigration Studies who is based here in Texas, actually started the anti-terrorism division with the DPS many years ago.

"Texas has a lot of intelligence horsepower, people don't really realize it" Bensman said, "A lot of information, a lot of material, and a lot of personnel."

And so what can the Texas DPS do, to bolster their anti-terrorism activities?

"Work more closely with the FBI, extra man power to the whole counter terrorism effort in Texas" Bensman told KTRH, "There's a lot going on in places like Dallas and Houston."

Case in point, the upcoming Houston Marathon, which will have 50,000 people. In addition to large public gatherings, there are also concerns about what they call 'soft targets'.

"Synagogue's, Jewish day schools, places where people are gathering outdoors in large numbers" noted Bensman, "Those would be considered soft targets, like in New Orleans."

The key is for all of the law enforcement agencies to work and collaborate together, and hopefully prevent any type of terror attack here in Texas.
