The Carter Center has confirmed that former President Jimmy Carter has passed away. He was 100 years old and had been in hospice for more than a year.
Carter was President from 1977 through 1980, beating Gerald Ford in the 1976 election but losing in a landslide four years later to Ronald Reagan.
While Carter was able to secure a peace agreement between Israel and Egypt while he was in office, he failed to secure the release of the American hostages held by Iran for 444 days, between 1979 and 1981.
Carter also was President when the economy suffered a severe downturn in the late 1970s.
His death comes thirteen months after former First Lady Rosalynn Carter passed away.
