The start of the 89th Texas legislative session is still over a month away, but that hasn't stopped a flurry of new bills from being introduced in Austin.
And that includes, House Bill 62, which was introduced by state representative Ryan Guillen, to boost school security.
"It's going to allow for remote human operated aerial devices, or drones" said Cameron Abrams, reporter for The Texan, "To fulfill the role of a armed security officer on campuses."
The drones would be operated by a person, but questions remain about how they would be used, and how often.
"I'm not sure of the logistics, if it's going to be constantly in the air, always monitoring the campus" Abrams told KTRH, "But we are seeing more use of drones."
As we've reported here at news radio 740 KTRH, local police departments are currently using drones to enhance their coverage. And, they can also save a little bit of money.
"What this bill would allow to do is, instead of actually having an individual on the campus, they could utilize a drone to fulfill that role of enhancing security and the safety on these school campuses, via a drone."
And speaking of money, according to Abrams, the bill would also raise the per-student allotment for security from $10 to $100 for each student in average daily attendance.
