What would make matters worse for a disengaged employee is a disengaged employer on top of it.
Employee engagement is at it's lowest level in over 10 years. According to a recent Gallup report, only 31% of U.S. employees were engaged in Q3. Gallup reported just a 30% engagement level in Q1 in 2013.
In a recent survey from employee recognition software company Nectar, 33% of employees also said their managers directly impact their engagement and about 41% of company leaders or managers are disengaged at work too.
Workplace culture expert Josh Patterson said employers need to find ways to connect with their employees so that work gets done on a consistent basis and to make the workplace more enjoyable.
"You have to be proactive about reaching out to them and making sure that they feel connected," Patterson said.
It's not a bad idea to add as much fun to the work environment either.
"The fun aspect is clearly an important one," said Patterson. "You've got to be transparent, honest and vulnerable and you've got to provide purpose too."
