Mixing Parenting and Partying in the College Scene

Parenting has it's challenges but there's times to have fun too.

The fall season on college campuses usually means Parents’ Weekend. A lot of parents aren't shying away from the parties with their kids either.

Relationship trainer Julie Nise tells KTRH News that parents should make sure they are instilling good morals and values into their kids well before they leave the home to go off to school.

"Whatever bond you've got with your kids needs to have been forged long before you get to the college party," she says.

Going off to college is a huge step in a teenager's life. College is a good time to figure out how to be independent while spending weeks and months away from their family and finding out more about the 'real world.'

"Going off to college is usually a time when children are really stepping into that independence and parents need to let them do so," Nise said.

Nise said it's also important to keep that balance of having fun and staying in touch with them but also giving them that independence.

"Being a parent is something you do, it is not something you are," said Nise. "It's very important that from birth to 18 to give them the wisdom, the values, the morals and the ethics so that they are prepared as adults to use those who make their decisions."
