Longtime Texas Democrat Party Leader To Resign

Longtime Texas Democrat Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa has announced plans to step down from his position following a brutal election cycle for the party.

The announcement came Friday, just days after Democrats posted worse numbers in this year's election compared to the 2020 statewide races. Incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz easily defeated Democratic challenger Colin Allred, doing so by nearly 1 million votes. Democrats did not flip any of the House seats held by Republicans either.

"While this was a hard decision, it is the best decision for our party, and I encourage our national leaders and party leaders to join me in lifting up the next generation in order to unite our party as we take on Donald Trump," Hinojosa said in a statement.

Trump cruised to a victory in Texas, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris by more than 14 points (over 1.5 million votes). It was a significant jump from the almost 6 points that Trump carried the state by in the 2020 presidential election.

Hinojosa has led the party since 2012. His resignation is effective in March.
