Report: Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Hasn't Been at Work Since 2020

The elected official in charge of Harris County voter registration reportedly hasn't been to her office since 2020.

The Houston Chronicle also reported that Harris Bennet has sent under twenty emails from her work account since the start of 2024. This comes after local attorney Jared Woodfill filed a lawsuit last week alleging issues with the county's voter rolls.

"It clearly supports our position in the lawsuit as to why the job is not getting done. She hasn't been there to do the job," Woodfill said.

The new report shows that Harris Bennett only used her employee ID to come into the office seven times in 2020, and not once after that. Her badge was used 92 times in 2019.

"Obviously we are not getting the bang for our buck. The bigger question is why other elected officials and people in that office remained conspicuously silent," Woodfill asked.

Harris Bennett announced in 2023 that she would not run for a third term to focus on her "family" and "health." Her office did not comment on the report.
