When the Texas Lottery was approved in the early 90's, lot's of promises were made about lots of money going to education. Texans are still waiting.
The Texas Lottery announced that it just had it's 2nd best year ever in sales at around $8 billion. But once again, the amount going to education was small.
It was roughly $2 billion for education and veteran services, which is not a lot compared to how much is brought in.
"When you look at the entire state budget, that's less than 1% of the entire state budget for a year" said Daniel Greer, reporter with the Texas Scorecard.
And when you take a look back to the early 90's when the lottery was approved, this is not what Texans were promised.
"When the lottery was sold to Texans, it was going to be a panacea" Greer told KTRH, "Well, that hasn't materialized. It's an agency that has over the span of it's life, continually tried to expand beyond it's own rules."
The bottom line is, the lottery is costing Texans more than it is helping them.
