The tide of public opinion appears to be shifting dramatically on the issue of border security. A new Ipsos poll finds 66 percent of Americans now support deporting all illegal immigrants. That includes 90 percent of Republicans, 68 percent of independents, and nearly half (47 percent) of Democrats. The poll also finds those numbers stay pretty much the same when the question is about deporting illegal immigrants "in your community."
These results are not necessarily surprising on the heels of more than three years of an open border crisis under the Biden administration. "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been the greatest gift ever to immigration enforcement advocates, because they've shown what not enforcing immigration law means," says Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies. "So I'm actually surprised it's not 96 percent (supporting deportations.)"
The poll also finds 65 percent view illegal aliens as either a major or minor threat, and even one-in-four view legal migrants as a threat. Krikorian believes these numbers are a result of America hitting rock bottom on the border crisis. "Sometimes things have to get bad, or the worst, before people realize what the actual solution has to be," he tells KTRH. "And that's kind of the silver lining around this disastrous four years at the border under Biden and Harris."
As for how these figures will impact the election in a few weeks, that remains to be seen. Trump has made mass deporting illegals a central promise of his campaign, while Harris has only recently called for "border security" in vague terms. "Elections are basically votes of confidence...do we want to promote (Harris) after she did such a terrible job on the border," says Krikorian. "And my feeling is the answer is probably going to be no."
