The door is still open ajar to a second debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. After initially stating he was done debating Harris following their first showdown last week, Trump told reporters he may be open to another debate "if I got in the right mood."
The Harris campaign is now openly calling for another debate (despite rejecting Trump's offer for two more debates weeks ago). Trump argues that he won the second debate despite biased ABC News moderators, and that Harris wanting another one is more proof she lost. But some Trump supporters and political strategists believe Trump should reconsider. "In my opinion, Donald Trump should be open to doing another debate," says Chris Begala, political analyst with Begala-McGrath. "He's gotta stick to the economy, the porous border, issues like that which affect people's lives...that's something that he really missed in the previous debate."
Other Trump supporters agree. Florida Sen. Rick Scott recently told the Hill, "If I were in Trump's position, I would (debate again)." Trump campaign adviser Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin said Trump should only do it if the debate was hosted by a less-biased network, like Fox News.
Begala tells KTRH Trump could benefit from another debate focused more on substantive issues and Harris weaknesses. "I think Donald Trump missed some opportunities in the first debate to stick to his knitting, as we say in Texas, and hammer on what people really care about," he says. "And that's the economy, immigration, the porous border...not Haitians eating dogs and cats."
