House Speaker Mike Johnson has pulled back a planned vote on a temporary spending bill scheduled for Wednesday.
The temporary plan would have tied in the SAVE Act, which requires proof of citizenship to vote in American elections.
At least six Republicans announced their intent to vote against the bill.
“No vote today because we’re in the consensus building business here in Congress. With small majorities, that’s what you do,” Johnson told reporters outside the House chamber. “We’re having thoughtful conversations, family conversations within the Republican conference and I believe we’ll get there.”
Congress has until the end of the month to pass a bill or risk a partial government shutdown.
