Texas lawmakers are meeting in Austin as another fight over school choice nears.
The Texas House of Representatives Committee on Public Education is meeting to discuss how the state could again work toward crafting an education savings account program, a policy goal that Republicans failed to achieve last year. That failure came at the hands of rural Republicans who went against the wishes of Governor Greg Abbott. The group was led by Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan.
In response to what happened, the Governor actively campaigned against those incumbent Republicans, with many of those Republicans losing their seats.
Abbott has said he has the votes to get school choice passed in the next legislative session.
