Democrats appear to have found a loophole in Texas law that allows them to engage in taxpayer-funded electioneering. A Texas Scorecard investigation found a Democrat political action committee called Powered By People (PXP)---associated with the former Beto O'Rourke campaign---has been sending out unsolicited voter registration applications using taxpayer-funded postage. PXP is using the Texas Secretary of State website, which allows anyone to send up to five postage-paid voter registration applications to any address without verifying who they're being sent to.
Texas has cracked down on sending unsolicited mail-in ballot applications after Democrats used that strategy during the pandemic, but the state hasn't tightened the rules on voter registration applications. "This circumvents the spirit of the law, which is that the application should be going to a person who is eligible to vote and has requested it themselves," says Cindy Siegel, chair of the Harris County Republican Party. "We will be talking to our legislators to try to eliminate that loophole."
In the meantime, Siegel warns this is part of the Democrat playbook to turn Texas blue. "Their intent as it relates to the border was to bring in people they hope will ultimately vote Democratic, and to bring in people to sway the Census," she tells KTRH. "It's all about Democrats trying to get more votes anyway that they can do it."
"Democrats push the envelope every way that they can, and we as Republicans have to stay one step ahead of them." she continues. "Because even if you're in a red state like Texas or a red county, they're coming for you...you just can't be complacent."
