The first presidential debate of 2024 may have been a wakeup call for Democrats. President Biden stumbled at times during the night, which reportedly is sparking concerns among Democrats over his age and ability to win against former President Trump in November. For 90 minutes the two spared over issues concerning National Security, the border and abortion.
President Biden started things off speaking quietly, losing his train of thought a few times throughout the event. This led to the white house issuing a statement after last night's event saying the President is dealing with a cold that "started slow" before hitting its stride before the debate. Biden was asked about being 81-years-old and also being the oldest president ever if he wins re-election. Biden said Trump is only a few years younger than him, "but a lot less competent." Trump who is 78, said he took two cognitive tests adding that he's in "very good shape."
Vice President Harris defended President Biden's debate performance. Speaking with MSNBC following the event, Harris said she felt Biden had a "slow start, but strong finish."
The next scheduled debate will be hosted by ABC News on September 10th.
