Democrats may ramp up the spending in Allred's U.S. Senate race

Top national Democrats are trying to flip Texas blue.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer recently told the media, “I think we’re going to win in Texas.”

The major race in Texas involves incumbent Senator Ted Cruz. His democratic challenger is U.S. Representative Colin Allred. Allred has represented the 32nd district of Texas since 2019.

A Cruz fundraiser e-mail sent out this month said Allred could spend upwards of 100 million dollars to try and defeat Sen. Cruz and pick up a seat for Democrats. That amount of money is much more than what previous Cruz challenger Beto O’Rourke spent in 2018.

Political consultant Bill Miller said Schumer's words will likely get eaten up by voters in November in the red-leaning state of Texas.

"That's what you would expect for the majority leader in the Senate to say," said Miller. "It's a prediction that won't be carried out on election day."

No matter the spending number, Miller doesn't see a path to victory for Allred, who is facing a 10 plus year Senator in Ted Cruz.

"Democrats have been in the wilderness and they need to win a statewide race, Allred is an attractive candidate, it's just a bad year and Cruz will be a tough opponent," Miller said.

One question on Miller's mind is how far will Democrats go and how much are they willing to spend on Allred's campaign to try and unseat Cruz. He believes the spending won't let up anytime soon.

"This is not the best prospect for them, they will continue to spend, but ultimately all the money is going to go towards swing states in the presidential election," said Miller.

"Texas is far from a swing state," he added.
