Majority of Americans support forgiving medical debt

According to a recent poll, most people support medical debt forgiveness in most cases.

An AP poll shows that six in 10 people with medical debt are in favor of medical debt forgiveness if the person has significant debt compared to their income. Even more people support medical debt forgiveness if someone experienced health care fraud.

Most Americans also say they would favor relief in instances where a patient has consistently made on-time payments toward an existing loan.

Certified Financial Planner and CPA Bill Dendy says the results of the poll come as no surprise to him.

"Normally a person does not choose to go into medical debt," Dendy said about one of the reasons why people would think the way they do about medical debt forgiveness.

Medical bills sometimes are a life or death situation. Dendy said this ideology could also be a push for a reform of the entire medical system.

"Many people view medical debt as something people shouldn't have in a civilized country," he said.

The real challenge with forgiving medical debt is deciding who's going to pay for it. Dendy said it'll fall on the taxpayer, one way or another.

"With a nation that has as much debt as we have currently, the inability to balance a budget, we should not do anything more than we must do and this would be adding one more thing that we might not need to do," said Dendy.
