Seasonal work starting to pick up for the summer

The month of May saw some seesaw action with full-time and part time employment.

The number of full-time workers dropped significantly last month, but the part-time job market is picking up now that we are in the summer months. With that, seasonal positions are becoming more common again too. It's also typical to see the construction industry or the agricultural field to add seasonal options.

According to a household survey, part-time workers went up by 286,000 to 28 million in May. A larger chunk of that number was with leisure and hospitality jobs with 42,000 added.

Ray Perryman, President of the Perryman Group, an economic research firm in Texas, said it's no surprise to see a rise in part-time employment this time of year.

"There's always some noise and more statistics this time of year," he said. "You've got a lot of student-workers that come in during the summer."

The summer time is usually the time to see high school or college-level people enter into the workforce. 17.4% of the workforce is made up of those working 35 hours or less. Perryman said some employers will go down the freelance route to find workers if they struggle to fill open positions.

"We have a fundamental worker shortage in this country," said Perryman.

There are currently around 8 million vacant jobs in the U.S., according to Perryman, who also said the number of seasonal workers that have been added to the workforce so far has been at a common rate.
