An officer-involved shooting Saturday at a park in Sunnyside is under investigation.
The Houston Police Department said the shooting happened at approximately 6:15 p.m. in the 8600 block of Comal St.
Officers first responded to reports of a man firing off multiple shots into the air. HPD Assistant Chief Megan Howard said the armed suspect was not cooperating with the officers and their commands to him to put down the weapon.
"They gave commands several times," said Howard. "At one point, the man then raises up the weapon and so officers, fearing for their lives, discharged their weapons at the suspect."
Howard said the encounter between the officers and the man lasted for at least five minutes. The man was also non-compliant when the officers tried taking him into custody.
The suspect was taken to a hospital with one gunshot wound to the leg. No other injuries were reported.
