AI use is picking up in the world of weather forecasting.
Computer scientists are programming AI to create models to forecast the weather. Current models used are derived out of physics. AI doesn't require as much work and can be programmed to do just about anything someone wants out of it.
Matt Lanza, Managing Editor of Space City Weather and Editor of The Eyewall, said AI has revolutionized weather-model data.
"One of the benefits of AI is that it can come up with a fairly close forecast outcome to what we currently have and it runs at substantially less computing power," said Lanza.
Lanza said AI is seen as a positive use in the meteorology community, who will still be using current models but will also utilize AI when communicating the weather and weather risks.
"I really think the potential is significant," Lanza told KTRH News. "We now have these new tools that we can compliment and learn from and see how they perform."
Lanza expects meteorologists to be using AI more during hurricane season this year, which is expected to have above average activity. He also anticipates more AI weather models to be created and looked at in the years to come.
