Tax relief available for some taxpayers impacted by severe April storms

The IRS says individuals and businesses from over 20 Texas counties impacted by severe storms that included tornadoes and flooding in areas of Texas in late April can now seek tax relief.

Households and individuals residing in the following counties qualify for tax relief:

Bell, Calhoun, Collin, Cooke, Denton, Eastland, Guadalupe, Hardin, Harris, Henderson, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Liberty, Montague, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Walker and Waller counties.

The Fort Bend and Galveston areas are not mentioned in the list from the IRS.

KTRH Money Man Pat Shinn said everyone's situation will be different so seeking help from a tax professional is a smart move.

"Consult a tax professional and see if this relief applies to you," said Shinn.

Also, relief is possible for everyone in those counties even if they did not endure storm damage.

"It does apply to everyone even if you did not sustain storm damage," Shinn confirmed.

IRS also announced they have pushed back various filing deadlines. Qualified taxpayers now have until Nov.1, 2024, to file various federal individual and business tax returns.
