After years of being a Democrat stronghold, the GOP has set its sights on flipping the South Texas region. They want to start by flipping the seat held by indicted Democrat Henry Cuellar. Cuellar is currently accused of bribery, money laundering, and working for a foreign government.
Political strategist Vlad Davidiuk told KTRH that Cuellar's indictment might have created an opportunity for the GOP. He said, "Negative press, heightened awareness, and it's after the primary. So there's nobody they can replace him with to try and protect the seat."
Davidiuk also says that there has been plenty of growth in the South Texas conservative movement that the GOP can capitalize on. He said, "They're first in line as victims of Joe Biden's failed border policy. So that has really garnered a lot of support for Republicans."
Davidiuk says he's got high hopes for the future, and any gains that are made in this election can also be capitalized on next time around.
