It was close to the end, but Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan has survived his primary runoff against challenger David Covey.
Phelan defeated Covey with 50.7% of the vote, winning by under 400 total votes. Covey needed to win by 1,092 votes in Jasper County, and only won by 726. The Texas speaker Phelan faces opposition from Republicans, namely Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who endorsed his opponent over Phelan's inability to get school choice approved.
Elsewhere, Congressman Tony Gonzales beat challenger and YouTuber Brandon Herrera to advance to the general election.
In Houston, Molly Cook leads Jarvis Johnson by less than 100 votes in a Democrat State Senate runoff. That race is a rematch from April.
Carolina Kane has a slim lead on Kenneth Omoruyi in the Republican race determining who will challenge incumbent Democrat Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.
