For those who love AM radio (especially iHeart radio!) - The bill that would require carmakers to keep AM radio in the dashboard has taken a step forward in Congress.
The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data and Commerce today approved the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (H.R. 3413) which, if passed, would require the Secretary of Transportation to issue a rule requiring access to AM broadcast stations in motor vehicles. Automakers would have at least two years to comply with the rule.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz and fellow Sen. Ed Markey together applauded the development, calling it “another clear signal that millions of consumers are demanding broadcast AM radio remain in their vehicles. … We are glad that our House colleagues recognize the importance of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, and look forward to working with our colleagues to enact this critical public safety legislation into law.”
The National Association of Broadcasters welcomed Thursday’s House vote.
“This critical legislation ensures that the 82 million Americans who rely on AM radio each month will continue to have access to diverse programming, local news and essential emergency information,” said NAB President Curtis LeGeyt. “AM radio is the backbone of our Emergency Alert System, providing timely alerts and information during disasters and emergencies, ensuring that critical communication remains available, even when cell and broadband services fail,” he said in a statement.
The bill has already made progress in the Senate, where a majority 61 lawmakers have said they support it. The Senate version (S 1669) has been passed out of committee and is now in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for when it comes to a vote.
