The Debate Over People Living In Flood Prone Areas

The recent rounds of flooding have brought back up the debate over the people who are living in flood prone homes. Should they stay? Or should they go?

The government is willing to buy them out, but the offers are for what the homes are worth, not how much they would need to find somewhere else to buy.

"Some people will sell, some people won't sell" said Precinct 3 Commissioner, Tom Ramsey, "It's a one house at a time issue, they don't want to sell their property for what the government will be willing to pay. The government can't pay them more than it's worth."
And while that's understandable, the other side of the issue is that by staying put, these homeowners are not only putting themselves in danger, but also the lives of the emergency officials who have to bail them out every time.

"I think that's a fair concern" Ramsey told KTRH, "But, we in America are very strong on property rights, that's the property they have."

The buyout process is voluntary, and another negative is that it takes about 18 months to complete.
