HPD Chief Troy Finner faced the media again, announcing that as of now 81,000 cases have been reviewed, which is roughly a third of the 264,000 suspended sexual assault cases that were reported.
"Some people make look at this as negative, I don't" Finner said from the podium, "It is a fact and it's evidence that our process is working, and I just want to be honest and transparent about that."
Honesty and trust are still an issue, especially after the Chief revealed that 220 more suspended cases have surfaced since the review was started. It was also learned that there were 96 rape kits in the suspended cases that had DNA matches.
"You may find some good news, and you might find more bad news, but the fact is that we're going to work through each and everyone of those incident reports."
Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers tells KTRH, it's going to take a long time to regain the public's trust and confidence.
"Why did this happen"? Kahan said, "It's going to be a long, long time and that's just reality. And I'm sure the department is well aware of it, to regain and restore public trust."
The Chief said there have been 5 arrests, and he hopes that the internal investigation will be completed by the end of the month, at which point Finner promises he will have a lot more to say.
