Over four thousand sexual assault cases were suspended due to a "lack of personnel." After months of controversy and investigation, charges are finally being filed in some of those cases, which are now under review.

In total, there were 264,000 criminal cases suspended by HPD under the "Lack of Personnel" code. Of those 264,000 cases, 4,017 were sexual assault cases. HPD has reviewed 3,883 of these sexual assault cases, and according to our TV partner Channel 2 news, HPD Chief Troy Finner confirmed that some charges have been filed.

Chief Finner says all 264,000 suspended cases will be reviewed, but right now, the department is prioritizing the sexual assault and family violence cases.

There is also an internal affairs investigation into why the cases were suspended under the "Lack of Personnel" code, as well as an investigation by an independent panel appointed by Mayor John Whitmire.
