The well-worn Montrose branch of the Houston Public Library is now closed.
The library's Executive Director Rhea Lawson announced the closure on Wednesday, and the last day of the Eleanor Freed Library was Thursday.
The library building was deteriorating, leading to safety concerns.
After several delays, a new location is finally under construction near Montrose Boulevard and Westheimer, with completion scheduled for late this year.
The University of St. Thomas has expressed an interest in buying the existing library building.
