HPOU President Doug Griffith Tells KTRH - "The Chief Should Recuse Himself"

As the on-going investigation continues into the thousands of sexual assault cases that were suspended by the HPD due to lack of personnel, the Houston Police Officers Union sent a letter to Mayor John Whitmire requesting the removal of Chief Troy Finner from the case.

"We believe the Chief should recuse himself from this investigation" said HPOU president, Doug Griffith, "Because at the end of the day, that's where this came from. All orders, they all come from the Chief's office."

The concern comes after two Assistant Chiefs were demoted, and with the focus of the investigation reportedly drifting to the lower level, as opposed to the top.

"The problem is, the investigation is being done in-house" Griffith told KTRH, "By a commander that was put in that position by the Chief. So, we want to make sure that we have a fair and independent investigation."

The HPOU believes that the Office of Inspector General would be able to asses the scandal from the outside, and look at the facts fairly and impartially.
