Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders recently held hearings in Washington DC where he advocated that the 40 hour work week be reduced to 32 hours, without changing compensation.
Economist Ray Perryman of the Perryman Group sees a few issues if the Sanders proposed changes are adopted.
Increases in labor costs risk making U.S. products uncompetitive. The end-result could be loss of jobs and business failures. While some companies and individuals might be able to adopt to the change in a standard work-week, Perryman feels that overall, it would be detrimental to the U.S. economy.
