The annual hatching of cicadas can be expected in May, but the central U.S. will see the bugs in historic numbers.
Most broods come in 13 or 17 year cycles, but some types make an annual appearance. Those are the ones we get.
Houston can expect to see the usual suspects while other parts of the country are overwhelmed by the noisy insects. "southeast Texas probably has at least a dozen species of cicadas around Houston, but they don't include these particular cicadas that have been in the national news lately," University of Arkansas entomologist Dr. Jon Zawislak tells KTRH News.
