Buried in a 1,039 page piece of legislation - The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 - is a provision that requires the Department of Transportation to develop a system that monitors drivers for impairment and alcohol levels - and disables their cars if specified levels are exceeded. This is supposed to happen by 2026
Pennsylvania Representative Scott Perry has introduced a bill (H.R. 6563) called the No Kill Switches in Cars Act, that would repeal this requirement. Texas Representative Mike McCaul, along with a host of other Representatives, have joined in support of this bill.
Jon Miltimore, Editor at Large of Foundation for Economic Education says the vast majority of Americans have no idea that this provision exists and would likely not approve if they knew about it. He says it is a massive overreach and intrusion into our private lives by the Biden Administration. Miltimore says there is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that provides for this type of government intrusion.
Jerry Reynolds, host of the Car Pro Show on KTRH and the CAR PRO RADIO NETWORK says there are better ways to deal with drunk drivers - and, he worries about the reliability, and cost, of this unproven technology. New cars are already unaffordable for many/most buyers, and adding this technology will only make them more expensive.
