Doctors now more than ever have access to artificial intelligence (AI) to assist them in their practices. From things as simple as helping book appointments to things as complex as assisting/making patient diagnoses. How will the technology be used in the future?
A recent survey by Medscape showed that while some doctors are excited about the potential to use AI in some ways, they see the potential risks when using AI for the diagnoses of patients. The survey suggested that 2 out of 3 doctors responding to the survey had concerns about their potential liability in the event there are problems with AI assisted diagnoses. Some also had concerns that their jobs might eventually be at risk from AI, depending on how it is used.
Dr. Brian Joondeph, a Denver-based Ophthamologist says that AI is already being used in many medical practices, including his. In most cases, current uses are for simpler, administrative type functions. In the future, he sees enhanced diagnostic capabilities - but probably not fully replacing a doctor's human intuition and skills.
