Report: McConnell Agrees to Attach JCPA Media Bailout to Defense Package

Breitbart is reporting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has caved to Democratic leaders by allowing media bailout bill to be added to defense spending package.

Both conservative and liberal outlets are speaking out against what's dubbed the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act, which would make it easier for local news organizations to negotiate collectively with Facebook, Google and Twitter.

"It basically creates a situation where Big Tech is going to have to subsidize Big Media collectively without anti-trust laws kicking in, and I think that's one of the big problems here," says media critic Jeff McCall of DePauw University.

"There's no real clear definition in this legislation to what constitutes journalism, or what is a journalism organization. They're trying to referee that in there, but there are a lot of loopholes and a lot of places where it's pretty vague."

Jeff McCall says similar legislation already passed in Australia, and is now pending in Canada, New Zealand and Great Britain.

"This is kind of a foot in the door for a lot of governments to try to start meddling in the journalism industry," he says. "Anytime government is meddling in the free flow of information and news, I think it's a loser."

Facebook is threatening to remove all news content if the bill is passed.
