Report: Taxpayer Dollars Funding Lawyers for Illegal Immigrants

Americans are asking questions after learning taxpayer dollars are helping illegal immigrants fight deportations in court.

The concern centers around $41.3 million in federal contracts the government awarded to a relatively new nonprofit. The Washington based group, called the Acacia Center for Justice, provides "legal support and representation to immigrants facing deportation". Jessica Vaughan, at the Center for Immigration Studies, doubts what the government is doing by awarding them the contracts is legal.

“Congress expressly prohibited providing taxpayer funded counsel to people in immigration proceedings with good reason,” Vaughan explained. “Taxpayers don’t want to pay people to fight deportation when they crossed into this country illegally.”

It comes amid an escalating crisis at the southern border. The number of encounters rose to more than 200,000 in August.
