Surfside Beach residents are expressing concern over plans to build a magnesium plant in Freeport, across the Intracoastal Waterway.
A company called Kisuma says its plant will bring jobs to the area.
Surfside Beach Mayor Gregg Bisso says its presence may affect the local touristy ambience. The plant will extract magnesium from saltwater for industrial and medical uses. The company says the process is safe and meets environmental regulations.
The Freeport City Council meets a week from Monday to discuss the proposal.
