Crime Stoppers Steps Up Again With New Houston Crime Index

With Houston heading towards a record year of violent crime, Crime Stoppers is stepping it up once again.

At a news conference featuring key local law enforcement officials, and even Mattress Mack, Crime Stoppers introduced the new Houston Crime Index.

"Absolutely, and without question, unsolved crimes have a heartbreaking affect on the families, and the people effected" said Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious.

Providing much needed support for law enforcement, the Houston Crime Index will track crime trends, and their affects on communities all across the Houston area.

The press conference also featured a passionate speech from local leader Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale.

"Why can't Harris County be the safest county in Texas, versus the deadliest" pleaded Mack, "In Houston, and in Texas, we do things big. Houston put a man on the moon, why can't we stop crime?"

The website will be launched later this year. Sadly, the biggest trend so far this year has been violent crime involving children, with a 333% increase in kids up to age 11, who have been killed this year.

"I've been doing this along time, over 30 years" said Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers, "I've just not seen what I am seeing, right now."

Clearly, the local leadership here in Houston has failed, and the hope is that come November, crime will no longer be a partisan issue.

"I've been in Harris County for 40 years" Mattress Mack told KTRH, "I love this place, all of our employees love it, and it's a shame what has happened."
